What are all the ways to experience Plum Island Light?
The present-day conical tower was built in 1898, back in the days when the lighthouse keeper on duty climbed the tower to undertake the daily work of guiding mariners and keeping them safe. Our main work is to preserve this original structure, which is 125 years old and to maintain it for posterity (keeping in mind that it was built for the work of one keeper, not for heavy traffic). We also focus on education around the history of the historic light (during our tours, in our handouts, and on the kiosk). Occasionally, we are able to open the light to the public and when we can, it is quite a special treat! Here are some ways to experience Plum Island Light:
1. Visit the grounds. Learn about the interesting history by checking out the outdoor kiosk full of photographs, maps, stories, and a timeline. (The lighthouse does not have its own parking, but there is a public parking lot nearby.)
2. Lighthouse Tour Days. Each summer season is unique in regard to the Tour Day schedule. The schedule for Tour Days is updated on the website before the start of each season.
3. We are permitted to have two short ceremonies (no receptions) per month, during our open season and are limited to size and other factors. Email friendsofpilight@gmail.com to inquire.
Who Are “The Friends of Plum Island Light?”
Friends of the Plum Island Light is a nonprofit educational organization established in 1994 to direct and support the preservation, operation, and maintenance of the Newburyport Harbor Light, aka Plum Island Light. One of the Friends primary objectives is to inform the public of the story of the light. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) leased the lighthouse to the Friends with an official transfer ceremony taking place on June 15, 1996. In 2003, the USCG deeded the lighthouse and property to the city of Newburyport, which, in turn, leased the tower to the Friends. The USCG still maintains the Fresnel lens and the electric-powered light within the lens.
Since 1996, the Friends have opened the lighthouse many times for the public and kept the light in beautiful shape. Below is a sampling of our restoration projects:
Replacement of the lighthouse floor
Construction of the supporting outbuilding
Installation of the memorial brick walkway
Interior wall board installation
Stairway lighting installation
Landscaping
Flagpole installation
Granite bench seating
New rubber roofing installed on the catwalk floor
Repainting of the entire lighthouse exterior
Replacement of first floor and landing windows
Installation of a new catwalk cable railing system
Installation of replacement glass panels and reglazing all the exterior glass panels of the light room
Repainting the interior of the light room
Installation of this kiosk
How Can I Support the Light?
